It's been half a day since news broke. UFA will be holding auditions for the now 1-year-old group, S/mileage.
In his VTR message, Tsunku firmly stated that "S/mileage is missing something." If that didn't cause fans to be upset, his follow-up statement that a "S/mileage demotion is possible" certainly did. (Tokyograph). Even the girls themselves were visibly upset by the news.
Many fans, wota, and the current S/mileage members all disapprove of this shocking news. So then why would upper management think that this is a good idea?
As stated above, Tsunku thinks that the group is missing something. Its not the statement itself that worries me; it's the vagueness. What exactly are they missing? The girls aren't perfect - no one is - but I firmly believe that a bunch of imperfect individuals can come together and make something that is perfect. S/mileage (maybe even more so than any other current H!P group) is dynamically equal. I believe that they all are at about the same level when it comes to dancing, singing, and personality. Yes, they could slightly improve on all three aspects, but anyone that is added will upset that balance that the girls have created.
Some fans have compared this situation to what happened with Morning Musume and their second generation of members, but I think that's a little off base. Yes, it was the first time that Morning Musume had auditions since their groups formation (just like S/mileage are having now), but that is where the similarities end.
A major difference is the time spent together. The original Morning Musume members were together for about three-fourths of a year before auditions happened. On the other hand, S/mileage's time together goes back way before their group was even formed. DAWA, Yuukarin, Sakichy, and Kanyon were all a part of the original Hello! Project Egg auditions of 2004. In 2009 S/mileage was formed and in 2010 they officially graduated from the Eggs. Even if they weren't necessarily together all of the time (despite the current state of the Eggs, they were quite large at one point), but they did many concerts and events together and were at least around each other for almost seven years - that's longer than C-ute has been together.
The girls of S/mileage have no doubt been through a lot together: from sharing a common bond in winning the Hello! Project Eggs audition to being chosen to be in S/mileage to having to gather 10,000 pictures of people's smiling faces. Not a single part of their journey was easy. As a matter of fact, their road to debut was quite possibly the hardest of anyone's since what the original Morning Musume members faced (having to sell 50,000 copies of their indies single, Ai no Tane in a week).
However, all of that adversity was not for naught; it built lasting friendships. That's not something that can be quickly made or bought; it's only possible by going through trials and tribulations together like S/mileage has. To suddenly add a new member after what the girls have accomplished together is an insult.
But even with all of that said, I'm not too sure how I feel exactly. Because S/mileage is so far removed from being my favorite Hello! Project group, I almost feel not qualified to give my opinion on this subject. I'm no where near attached to them as I am with Berryz Koubou or C-ute. But still, I can't help but feel for the girls. Yes, Tsunku did give (another) vague statement years ago about S/mileage's line-up possibly changing a couple of years ago, but that hardly makes it fair.
A surprise audition like this definitely will create publicity (S/mileage was trending in Twitter in Japan when the announcement hit and there are already multiple Japanese news articles up about this subject), which is no doubt what management wants to create, but I can only wonder at what cost?
Even if a new member or two increases sales by five or ten thousand, was it really worth it? The chemistry that these girls have is not something that you want to mess with. And adding a random girl off of the street will do just that. Great music isn't created by machines (auto-tune) or facades; it's created by passionate people and the things they've been through to get to where they are today. Some of the best music I've ever heard are by married couples doing duets or by bands that have been around the world together. No matter how good this new girl is, she can't replicate what S/mileage has - camaraderie. And that is why I oppose these auditions.
I agree with everything you have to say.
ReplyDeleteThe girls are not perfect.
But S/mileage is something quite special.
Their songs helped me through a lot of tough times, and I know it sounds corny, but it's because they made me 'smile', which is, to be completely honest, exactly what the group is supposed to do.
I do not understand what Tsunku thinks is missing at all.
idk i think Tsunku is hilarious and a genius. but OMG POOR YUUKA SHE LOOKED LIKE SHE WAS GONNA VOMIT.
ReplyDeleteI agree S/mileage is fine just the way it is no matter what anyone says this is crazy...

I just hope the fans (and everyone else for that matter) won't go too hard on the new girl(s). They're innocent in all this, yet they risk bearing the most of the blame/hate that is going around.
ReplyDeleteIf you have to hate on this decision, direct your hate to Tsunku/UFA. That's what wota's and fans have been doing for years. Why break that "lovely" tradition?
i think that s/mileage is awesome and great just the way it is, i definitely did not expect this crazy thing 2 happen!!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if any S/M fan will be in the audittion, because they know that they will be hated.
ReplyDeleteThe only "something" missing from S/mileage was Saho Akari, but now she is a member of UFZS/UpFront Girls. To be honest, I always felt that Saki must have felt somewhat guilty for this, but that was not her fault. She has been a great part of S/mileage. The only "missing" element now is the depletion of the H!P Eggs. Their numbers should be replenished. Why else is Tsunku training them?
ReplyDeleteWhen I found out about the auditions I was initially shocked, but I am happy with what is happening as well. In a way I am 50/50. These auditions can make or break S/mileage.
ReplyDeleteS/mileage is one of those rare groups in H!P who have brought a lot to the plate - they are simply awesome, they are cute and quirky and they have a lot of fans.
But I think the auditions might be a good thing - I am unsure right now, but I do agree on one thing; they have grown close and created a bond, and now someone new is coming in. Of course they're gonna be a little scared or worried by this news.
Tsunku is probably a genius, but he's rather impulsive, don't you think? xxx
@Leia: I can understand how you feel. Berryz was the first H!P group I ever found out about and their songs did the exact same thing to me - cheer me up when I was sad and make me smile.
ReplyDelete@Raffi: Would you be saying the same thing if he did this to C-ute?
@Kylon: I would hardly say three posts is so much. I rarely blog about S/mileage anyway
@May-Lyn: We'll just have to wait and see how S/mileage's auditions shapes up and hope that the group becomes better.
@tommyvd: That's a legit concern to have. As an Airi fan, nothing gets my blood boiling more than "fans" blaming Airi for Shock.
I'm not going to immediately hate the new girl(s) like I know some people will, but they still will have to earn my fanboying, which is the way I handle all new members.
@AnimeCRAZY Anita: Yeah it was a pretty random announcement. I don't think anyone saw it coming.
@Evangel: I'm sure they will. People may be opposed to this audition now, but if we get someone like Suzuki Kanon, it will change many people's opinions.
@muldenhutten: I absolutely agree. Anyone who has followed my blog for a while will know how much I wanted greatness for Saho. It really sucks for her to not have been chosen and now being pushed off into a k-pop cover group.
I believe the Egg's original purpose was to train until they become ready to debut into H!P, but the actual result has been far from what was promised.
@Blue-chii: Tsunku is definitely a genius, but even he has made mistakes in the past. I trust him and I know that he's not doing this to hurt the girls. UFA just wants the best group possible, so I hope it all works out.
I think people so quickly forget that Tsunku isn't the one that actually makes the decisions. The only thing Tsunku does is be the public punching bag and write the lyrics/melodies of songs.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that since Tsunku is the face of the company, he gets a lot of heat that he doesn't deserve, but he is all of the Hello! Project's producer and he does have major pull in decisions like this.
ReplyDeleteFor example, for Koharu's graduation, he stated the following: "Based on seeing all of her work so far, as a producer, I felt I wanted to let her have a solo career, so decided to have her graduate." Which definitely implies that it was his decision (whether it was his alone or joint decision between his bosses is impossible to know, however).
And he said something similar in his twitter account about the S/mileage auditions: "From the very beginning I stated that the number of members was not fixed. I'm just now putting that into practice." Which I think implies that he also had a hand in this decision.
So it might not be his decision alone, but he definitely has a major say in H!P matters like this one.
Tsunku is also the one who decided to graduate JunJun and LinLin, if I recall. He was the one who also discussed Ai's future with her. Eri went to him when she decided she needed to graduate. He does have a pretty big part in it.
ReplyDeleteBesides being the punching bag.
Now, back to S/mileage audition discussion, I will not hate the new girl or course. It will take a lot and I MEAN A LOT of time to get used to her. I mean it's just that Tsunku needs to realize that he already has enugh large groups that do well in Momusu, Berryz, and C-ute (And there's also Canary Club, that no one remembers and hasn't released anything new since last year except for Ogawa Mana, and yeah, Tsunku plays a big role in that project too.) He needs to make room for some smaller groups too. We all know how successful Buono! is. Enough said. (but then again it consists of three of the most popular girls in Hello!Project. But still.)
After reading today's article about Saki's graduation, I just now read this article. It just makes me wanna cry... the four of them have been through so much together, and now members are being added and removed and it's just NOT FAIR! :(
