Sayashi Riho's push to the front: How I see it

It's no secret that Sayashi Riho is right in the middle of things for just about everything that has to do with Morning Musume's Only you single. She's in the center of the PV's dance shot sequences,

is prominent and/or in the center of two out of the four CD covers,

and has more lines than any other 9th generation member.

But why Riho? Mizuki has more Hello! Project experience. Kanon has more personality. Erina has a more unique tone. Why is Riho pushed ahead of not only her fellow 9th generation members, but also ahead of some of her senpai members? Continue reading on to find out my thoughts.

First let me make my stance clear: I have absolutely no problem with Riho being front and center. And no, she's not my favorite 9th gen member - she's actually my least favorite. But, I believe that Riho being pushed ahead is for the group's own good.

Let's face it, right now Takahashi Ai is Morning Musume. She's Morning Musume's most talented member and is heavily featured in virtually every single. Her sales figures prove that she's Hello! Project's most popular member. Her merchandise sales are always near the top. The problem is, Takahashi Ai won't be a member of Morning Musume for too much longer. She's moving on and Morning Musume must soon do the same. The group needs a new ace; someone to pick up where Aichan will leave off. Unfortunately that is much easier said than done.

You see, Aichan really is a rare talent. That tiny five-foot frame (arguably) contains Hello! Project's best singer and dancer. How many other times in Hello! Project history can we say that about someone? Ayaya: sure. Gomaki: maybe. Considering that there have been well over 70 individual Hello! Project artists over the years, it's safe to say that someone of Aichan's abilities does not come around very often.

So in short, to replace someone like Aichan you need a special individual. Someone that oozes talent and excels at being an idol. But where do you find someone like that?

Riho is only 13 years old (Happy Birthday!) so it's way too early to crown her as Aichan's heir apparent, but I don't blame fans for being excited over her. She reminds me a lot of Aichan, actually: they both had prior dance training before joining Morning Musume (and entered the group as pretty good dancers as a result), both have similar personalities (though Riho seems more outgoing at age 13 than Aichan was), and I even see them as the same type of singer.

Given her limited opportunities (yes, she has a lot of screen-time and lines in Only you, but let's not forget that it is only one single), Riho has shined. I think she sounded especially great in her solos. This is especially impressive when you realize that this is a 13 year old new member that is holding her own against Morning Musume's veterans. If you go back to 2001 and listen to how Aichan and Gakisan sounded compared to Abe and Goto Maki you'll often see that it's not even close.

But let's not get too excited. Aichan and Gakisan have been doing their thing in Morning Musume for almost as long as Riho has been alive. Riho still has a long way to go to be on their level. However, at the very least, she has shown that she has something inside her that potentially can grow and be harnessed into something great.

That only leaves the question of why Riho and not any of the other 9th gen members instead. At this point, they all are still new members, so you may be wondering why Riho was chosen over the other three. My thought process is this: besides the talent factor (which I wouldn't take lightly - Morning Musume and Hello! Project in general focuses more on talent than most other idol groups), the other major thing that a lead singer needs is popularity. No matter how talented a girl might be, sales won't increase if the group is headed by someone the public doesn't like (or at least isn't in love with). It's just a sad fact of the idol world and it is the only reason why I believe that someone as talented as Linlin wasn't given more opportunities than she received.

With that said, Riho has actually already become quite popular. Ever since she joined Morning Musume in January, she has been among the top 10 in Hello! Project merchandise sales figures. She even made it to the number two spot, right behind Aichan, for the month of April (which is the newest sales ranking that we have right now). Like her or not, she is quickly becoming a favorite among fans.

The senior management at UFA didn't just pick Riho's name randomly out of a hat and decided to push her to the center. They did it because they have great reason. Her talent level may be subjective and debatable to some, but what cannot be debated is her climb to the top of Hello! Project's popularity charts in such a short amount of time. Although no one can say for sure just what kind of idol Riho will become, she has all the tools to make a great idol, and if Only you is any indication, I think Sayashi Riho (and more importantly, Morning Musume) will be just fine.

  1. Clear, concise and unbiased. Great post. Why can't all idol fans be like this? Can't we all just get along?

  2. @tommyvd: Kind words, thanks. Yeah I agree. No matter who you are a fan of, they are all idols - even if they belong to a different agency. They all are constantly practicing to improve themselves so that they can all continue living their dreams and I can respect that. I just wish more people would as well.

@Kylon: Yes, I know that she has experience outside of H!P, which is why I was very careful with my choices of words in that sentence. I said she has more H!P experience (Mizuki's 3 years of being an Egg vs Riho's few months of a Momusu member), not overall. And I consider that relevant because being an idol is very different than singing in a play.

    But thanks for the comment.

  3. I like this post :') It is not biased unlike other blogs... :) I wish other H!P bloggers must read this post to understand why Riho seem to be the center and focused 9th gen. member.

And I think this song suits her better:

I agree with Tommy, this was a great way to state your opinion without stepping on any toes.

Though I do disagree with the statement about Riho being more outgoing than Ai was. I think Riho's shyness is worse in all areas except her dancing. She can't do anything cute without burying her head into someone else's shoulder. But that's really endearing.

I see a lot of Ai's qualities in Riho, along with some of Reina's. She just needs time to develop. Until all the girls develop I think Riho is the best choice to fill any obvious gaps.

There is such a big age gap between the senpai and kouhai that it's obvious that in no time the senpai will graduate and leave the legacy of Morning Musume to the Kyuukies. So no worries, huh.

  5. very nice post :) I agree with this. I thinkpart of Riho's appeal is that she IS that she is exactly the opposite of Ai-chan, actually. Riho is extremely confident and professional for her age, and even if she may not be the most talented singer, she certainly acts like it and works with what she has. Of course, this might turn some people off, but I think a lot of people just needed to see that one 9th gen that clearly was driven to become the new ace. So basically: Riho has become the new ace because she makes everyone feel like she wants it and is good enough for it.
The other members-- yes, they are adorable and possibly equally talented. I love all of them (okay, okay. Maybe with the exception of Ikuta). But they are very much typical newbies-- very humble and very much still looking up to their senpais.

  6. I agree. We just have to remember too, that while Mizuki has been in H!P for quite a while, she along with Kanon and Erina also have to focus a lot on learning dances. Of course Riho does as well, but she has been dancing for half of her life already, she doesn't find it as difficult to memorize and such. When it comes to dancing, Riho IS the new Aichan, that's no doubt. Vocally we still have to see, of course, but with Riho being pushed and from what we've heard it does sound like she has quite something going on for her.
I just hope that soon enough the rest of the girls get more time to shine, too. Kanon and Mizuki both have pleasant voices and with practice, Erina could become quite acceptable as well.

  7. I completely agree with this post. It was pretty obvious during the auditions that Riho was going to be pushed. Out of the new members Riho is the best at singing and dancing, and is the prettiest. Riho and Mizuki are most likely going to be the center of the 9th gen. Like Ai and Risa were the center of the 5th gen.
However, I still don't like Riho. I love her voice and her talent, but she seems just a tad arrogant. And I doubt that will approve over time. I'll be shocked if she doesn't have a similar personality to Reina or Miki.

Meanwhile, I'm loving the underdogs Kanon and Aika. Who are completely destined to never get lines. :/

  8. @helloprojectfan: Thanks!

@Hidders: Maybe it's because it's been forever, but I don't remember Aichan doing anything of note (cute or not) when she first joined. Yes, Riho blushes/hides/whatever when she does it - but at least she does it. That's what I meant by less shy.

But I think you said it best - she has what it takes to be great in her, but she needs time. They all do. Thankfully Morning Musume still has a couple of great singers (Reina, and the newly emerged Gakisan) that can show those young guns how its done.

@cr1st3ll3: Thanks! I think that, like you said, Riho is driven and that is what sets her apart. The other 9th gen members could very well have it in them, but we'll never know that it's there if they don't show flashes of brilliance (and to be fair, they also need to be given opportunities as well).

@rinrin1513: Good point. In the Bijou Gaku episodes where 9th gen were featured, Riho seemed to "get it" faster than her fellow 9th gen members, so that's a huge positive for her. Plus, during bootcamp she never truly screwed up, whereas all of the other finalists did show some form of weakness.

The others will get their moment in the spotlight in due time. Even JunLin had solo songs/performances, so I'm not too worried about that.

@AimxAim: Even if you don't necessarily like her, I hope that you will at least agree that without people like Reina and Miki, Morning Musume's overall talent level would be much lower.

Actually, I think that is why larger idol groups (and companies) are so charming. You have a melting pot of different personality types, so you are bound to find someone you can relate to.

  9. Of course I realize their talents. I mean, I kinda hate Reina but if she left tomorrow Momusu would be screwed. XD

That's exactly what I like about them too. Even if I don't like Reina there's tons of other girls to focus on.
